چکیده

The aim of this project is to investigate what kind of terminological knowledge representation system (TKR-system) is able to support the modeling of huge chemical plants. In this highly complex modeling application, a TKR-system is the appropriate tool to serve as a user{database interface. What distinguishes TKR-systems from database systems is their ability to infer implicit knowledge from the knowledge explicitly stored in a knowledge base. TKR-systems diier among other aspects in the concept language that can be used for the representation of the application relevant knowledge. On the other hand, diierent kinds of knowledge from diierent applications ask for diierent concept languages. This process modeling application asks for the consideration of new concept languages and even for new constructors of these languages. To aggravate the situation, the amount of time and space needed by the reasoning services of a TKR-system increases with its expressive power. Hence the choice of an appropriate TKR-system for a given application is a diicult task and the results made while treating it are subject to this paper.

A Knowledge Representation Formalism to Process Vague Medical Queries

Many fields of application deal with vague and fuzzy information. Thus the need of tools that are able to handle this kind of data is obvious. We concentrate on the extension of well-known terminological knowledge representation systems with appropriate methods. Classical terminological knowledge representation systems are based on two-valued logics. To solve problems of uncertainty a more expr...

A Denotational Semantics for Joining Description Logics and Object-Oriented Programming

Despite their common roots, the paradigms of object-oriented programming and object-centered knowledge representation could not really be joined again. While the knowledge representation branch highlights clear semantics and focuses on subsumption and classification-based inference algorithms, object-oriented programming shines with flexible control structures and software-engineering issues. B...

Knowledge Representation and Reasoning with Definitional Taxonomies

We provide a detailed overview of knowledge representation issues in general and terminological knowledge representation in particular. Terminological knowledge representation, which originated with KL-ONE, is an object-centered approach in the tradition of semantic networks and frames. Terminological systems share three distinguishing characteristics: (1) They are intended to support the defin...

A Layer Architecture for the Integration of Rules, Inheritance, and Constraints

We informally introduce TaxLog, a close integration of logic programming and terminological reasoning. Terminological systems are handling declarative logic-based descriptions of conceptual knowledge. Most of them restrict their expressiveness and focus on (eecient) reasoning algorithms for certain services. This imposes principal restrictions on the expressivity of such a formalism. To get max...

Workshop on Comparing Description and Frame Logics

The specification of reusable terminological knowledge is one of the key issues in today’s knowledge engineering. Providing formal languages with precise semantics and inference support can significantly support this activity. The aim of the workshop was to understand and to compare existing approaches developed in other research communities. We investigated research on description languages an...
